This year we welcome ten new members to Merriott Bowls Club, and hope that all will enjoy their bowls and have many happy years with the club.
July started with our first game in the Wessex Fours Cup which was played against South Petherton. Two rinks played at each club at the same time. This meant it was very difficult to see how each club was doing until everyone had finished and exchanged scores. The final result was that South Petherton won on three rinks, however, on the last rink Dawn Greenfield, Chris Woods, Jim Greenfield and Fred Bull won by such a huge margin that their score cancelled all the deficits on the other rinks and gave Merriott a win by two points! The next round will be on Aug 5th against Gillingham, again with home and away rinks.
However, Merriott also continue to lead the Wessex Fours League, although most clubs have played differing numbers of games so the position will only become clearer when the number of games played evens up

In the Triples League (our first year in this league) we are currently in fifth place.
At the start of July we had a new for this year Fun Day where we raised money for St Margaret’s hospice. While we used our bowls, the eight games were very different from how we normally play. There were wild animals on the green which had to be circumnavigated, a ramp to bowl over, opaque glasses to wear, bowling with both arms, and a fantastic bowls launcher built by Martin (Paddy) White. The day concluded with a buffet with all items brought by the members who had been playing, and a prize giving where the results were so close that everyone who took part won a trophy or medal!
