A celebratory exhibition match was played between Merriott and the Somerset Patrons to commemorate 90 years of bowling at the Recreation Ground. The Patrons are an invitation side drawing players from all over Somerset (similar to Rugby’s Barbarians) and they must have invited good players, as they beat Merriott on all 4 rinks!

The result, however, was irrelevant, as the purpose of the match was for the bowling community of Somerset to acknowledge the contribution Merriott has made to bowling in the County. The match was played in good spirit, with a relaxed meal enjoyed by all at the end.

Merriott Bowling Club was formed in 1934 by Merriott’s Vicar, The Rev. S Percival, who stated that the Bowling Club had made a promising opening and he understood that the game was popular amongst the younger parishioners and not entirely left to the “old fogies.”

As the picture shows, that popularity continues !!!!!!
